Since ancient times, a unique indigenous martial art named Angampora has been popular among the people of the Uva region. Historical records reveal that this ancient combat technique was employed to repel various military invasions in the past.

The art of Angampora can be divided into three main categories:

  1. Angam: Unarmed combat techniques.
  2. Ilangam: Armed combat techniques.
  3. Mayangam: Combat techniques involving mystical practices.

During the 1818 Uva-Wellassa Rebellion, the ferocity of this martial art led the British colonial rulers to ban its teaching, learning, and practice. Violators faced severe punishments, including the death penalty. After being practiced secretly for over 200 years, Angampora has recently regained widespread recognition both locally and internationally. This martial art not only develops physical abilities but also fosters mental concentration and spiritual growth through meditation techniques and other traditional practices.

In modern times, the Uva Traditional Combat Institute is striving to preserve and promote this art form. By utilizing the techniques of traditional martial arts, we aim to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual capabilities.
