Alegend states that the king ravana hid queen sitha ( wife of king rama ) in this cave ( as related in the hindu epic ramayanaya ). The cave is quite large, 100 meters long and has been formed by metamorphosed crystalline lime stones from the pre cambrianera. Sri lanka archeologist dr. Deraniyagala found a human skeleton dating from 800 to 2500 bc and which belongoda man ( homo sapiens balangodensis ) upon an excavation of the cave. Today ravana cave hike is a popular hike in ella.

to reach ravana ella cave and ravana ella temple one has to travel along ella – wellawaya road up to ravana ella junction and turn right. It is 1 km from the main road.
