Wangedigala, situated in Kalupahana within the Badulla district of Sri Lanka's Uva province, is renowned as a favored hiking destination, particularly cherished by locals. It forms part of a rock peak continuum that includes Wangedi-kanda and Balatuduwa, eventually culminating in Gonmolliya, which stands approximately 2,034 meters tall, ranking as the 14th highest peak in the country. The moniker "Wangedigala" derives from Sinhala, where "Wangedi" translates to "pestle," aptly capturing the mountain's distinctive peak shape reminiscent of this kitchen tool. 

To reach Wangedigala from Belihuloya, travelers should embark on a journey approximately 14 kilometers along the Colombo – Batticaloa Highway, followed by an additional 3.2 kilometers along the Kalupahana – Ohiya Road. This route guides adventurers to the doorstep of Wangedigala, providing convenient access to embark on their hiking expedition or camping escapade amidst the captivating landscapes of this renowned destination.

The trek to Wangedigala offers adventurers a diverse landscape, leading them through pine forests, verdant grasslands, and cascading waterfalls, culminating in a breathtaking panoramic vista from the summit. Esteemed by locals, this hike demands considerable stamina, typically spanning 3 to 4 hours for the average hiker. Moreover, Wangedigala's cool climate and awe-inspiring views make it a sought-after camping spot, enticing outdoor enthusiasts to bask in its natural splendor.

Traversing the forested paths of Wangedigala rewards hikers with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, showcasing notable landmarks such as the majestic Bambarakanda Falls and the enchanting Lanka Ella Falls. However, navigating these trails entails ascending steep mountain slopes cloaked in a carpet of pine needles. Consequently, hikers must exercise added caution, particularly as these slopes can become slippery when dry, necessitating additional safety measures to ensure a secure and enjoyable trekking experience.
