Kataragama Mosque Shrine

Kataragama Mosque Shrine is located at Kataragama sacred area. There was an old mosque with wattle and daub at the beginning .Muslims came from Hambantota area and Indian Fakirs in search of divine water ‘Maul Hayath’. A pious Sufi Seyed Jabbar Ali Shahcame to Kataragama and lived there for the rest of his life. It’s believed that around 1845, Seyed Jabbar Ali Shah erected the Kataragama mosque replacing the old wattle and daub building. There are two mosques in walled area, the old mosque and new mosque with two cemeteries of pious Muslim religious leaders.
