Kataragama Maha Dewalaya

Kataragama Maha Dewalaya is the main shrine at Kataragama and dedicated to God Kataragama. Buddhist, Hindu and Christian devotees come to wow and get blessings from God Kataragama. Offerings can be done early in the morning, noon and in the evening. Main offering times are 5.00 am, 11.00 am and 7.00 pm and usually there is a large crowd gathered for offerings. Mostly the devotees come wearing white with a tray full of fruits for offering to God Skanda which has been a long standing ritual. Some of them husk coconuts and some others show their devotion in numer ous ways. The Kataragama God is a Warrior god. In August Kataragama Dewalaya holds its Esala Festival with a pageant attended and seen by a large crowd.It is believed that the Kataragama Maha Dewalaya was erected by  King Dutugemunu (161-131 BC) after defeating King Elara. Adjacent to Kataragama dewalaya is Ganadevi Kovil dedicated to God Kataragama’s brother Ganesha. Kiri Vehera temple, Mahasen Dewalaya, Asta Pala Bodhi Tree (Eight Seedling Bodhi Tree) and Kiri Vehera are in close proximity.
